Pleasure Spiked with Pain

What's the most unnecessary thing that you will gladly sacrifice your comfort for to have with your backpacking gear on the trail?

I don't know about you guys, but when I get out on the trail I always do my best to shed as much weight as possible. After so many miles that weight can wear ya down. Some of us like to go backpacking with dogs that have their own packs that may hold a few extra snacks ;) A lot of us won't even bring a backpacking chair to ease it up a bit more.

There is one thing however, that I always manage to find room for.....a first night's epic dinner.

One thing that I started doing somewhere along the way was cooking meat on rocks. I've never had better steaks than the ones I cooked on a hot rock in the middle of a camp fire. If you haven't tried it, I recommend you get on that!

I've gotten pretty creative along the way as well. Steak is not the only thing you can use this method for. I will say though, I do prefer anything that is sealed and pre-marinated ....yum.

I've brought along tri-tip, filet mignon, ribeye, pork loin, chicken thighs, you name it. In my drinking days I would always manage to squeeze some liquor in there, but that never made for a good next day. One time I actually hiked a full on frozen pizza in the box (wasn't frozen when I got there) and we built a rock pizza oven to cook it in. That's some damn good pizza!

The best part about this is that you only have to hike it in....while your fresh and full of energy. It's kind of like a nice little bonus for handling that trail like a boss.....for not being INSIDE!

What's your guilty additional weight? Am I the only one who does this?

Let's Outside!
